What Child Is This?

Over the past 26 days I have posted every day a devotional to help keep our focus on Christ this Christmas season.  Today is Christmas day.  As I type this, I am writing my last Christmas themed blog post for this year.  I wondered about what to write today.  As I prayed about this, God brought to mind William Dix’s hymn, “What Child is This?”  I love this hymn.  It is simple, yet deep.  It is in a minor key, yet is a song of rejoicing.  These contrasts help to underscore the point of the song . . . to underline the paradoxes present as the Savior lay in the manger.

Your presents are probably unwrapped, but before you wrap up your Christmas season, may your hearts reflect back over the words of this song.  Remember, “The King of Kings salvation brings, let loving hearts enthrone Him!”

What Child is this who laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping?

Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing

Haste haste to bring Him laud the babe the son of Mary

Why lies He in such mean estate while ox and ass are feeding

Good Christian fear for sinners here the silent Word is pleading

This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing

Haste haste to bring Him laud the babe the son of Mary

Nails and spears shall pierce Him through, the cross He bore for me, for you

Hail hail the Word made flesh the babe the son of Mary.

This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing

Haste haste to bring Him laud the babe the son of Mary

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrhh come peasant, king to own Him

The King of Kings salvation brings let loving hearts enthrone Him

This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing

Haste haste to bring Him laud the babe the son of Mary

Raise, raise the song on high the virgin sings her lullaby

Joy, joy for Christ is born the babe the Son of Mary

This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing

Haste haste to bring Him laud the babe the son of Mary
