Every once in a while I come across a song that really makes me think. Such was the case today when I heard a song by singer/songwriter David Wilcox entitled “Inside My Head.” I think it painst some interesting pictures for us to consider as Christians. Read these lyrics and then let me hear from you. What stands out?
“I got such a mess between my ears
like dishes in the sink
Stuff I don’t believe just tumbles in
until I don’t have room to think
These dark clouds I’ve stowed away
just in case of a sunny day
So I can stand in the pouring rain
of every tear I’ve ever shed
I’ve got to empty out the inside of my head
This could be a room with such a view,
but its covered up with junk
Blocking off the place the light gets through
so it keeps me in this funk
All my failures are on display,
the broken dreams of yesterday
Stuff I should have thrown away,
but I’ve kept it here instead
I’ve got to empty out the inside of my head
I’ve got to empty out the inside of my head
I’d like to turn this place into my home
instead of someplace that I dread
Its the only place thats mine alone,
and I’ll live here ’til I’m dead
I’ll sort through what I have found,
the stuff that works I’ll keep around
But I can’t live weighted down
with every cruel word they said
I’ve got to empty out the inside of my head
I’ve got to empty out the inside of my head
I’ve got to empty out the inside of my head”
The two parts that stood out most to me were the picture of the inside of my head being a hodgepodge of thoughts that are like dirty dishes in a sink. The second is the statement that our lives could have a beautiful view, but all our bad experiences and beliefs crowd at times block out the light. As I read these lyrics I thought of a couple of verses:
“when you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; He took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” – Colossians 2:13-15
“Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this owrld, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2
What thoughts do you have?
Mark,
David Wilcox is one of my favorite artists. I grew up in Greenville, South Carolina listening to his music and have seen him perform several times in North and South Carolina. I am so happy to see his lyrics being applied….I love most of his stuff. He’s such a great writer.
My husband and I have been attending WCC for about a year and half and really appreciate your messages on Sunday.
Thanks,
Karyne
Thanks so much for the encouragement Karyne! Glad to know there are a few other David Wilcox fans out there!
